Abstract: The article discusses how data from the NSI and EUROSTAT are used and understood by different users - media, analysts and researchers and the general public. Using examples from the statistics of incomes and living conditions the analysis highlights the importance of metadata and especially the definitions of indicators not only for the understanding of statistics but also for the way in which society and the economy as a whole are seen and conceptualized.
